You are being trusted not to misuse the features of your VM to adversely affect the VMs of your classmates and lecturer, and to run and administer your VM in a responsible manner. Use of the VM comes under the university acceptable use policy for information technology equipment, the policy you signed and undertook to abide by when enrolling at Bond.
The VM login account you have been given has administrator privileges. Amongst other tasks this allows you to:
- change any system, desktop and operating system service settings and have them persist for all future use of your VM
- activate and upgrade the operating system
- download and install new software to the limit of your virtual disk storage
When using your VM:
- be aware that should you corrupt your VM so as to make it unusable another copy of the original VM image can be made available quickly; however all data files stored on the VM will be lost; therefore backup your important data files to another drive such as your H: drive or USB drive each time you log out from your VM
- under no circumstance allow any other student to connect to and login to your VM; you may login yourself and then discuss your executing VM with other students to demonstrate software and to seek advice
- only download and install software suggested by the lecturer or software relevant to the course topics; if in doubt seek advice via the subject discussion forum
- do not download and install network management or network activity monitoring software of any kind
- should your VM fail to restart or be shutdown inadvertently, email the lecturer immediately who will arrange for a support staff member to start the VM on your behalf
You are part of a privileged group of students who are using the centrally-hosted VM model for giving you access to operating systems and specialist software that can't be made available in the teaching labs. Please note the benefits and disadvantages of your use of VMs as your feedback will be sought at the end of the semester.
